Chapter Eleven

Miracles do happen!

Thanksgiving was three weeks away and I had a lot to be thankful for. Once again Toby and I were soulmates. It felt right and natural doing life together. Another thing to be thankful for. Sid wanted to hire me full time, so, I was quitting the paper.

Vince will die. I still hadn’t told him about me and Nate breaking up. I decided to do that when I handed in my resignation. It might make it easier for him to let me go. Besides, with this huge project of repurposing a hosiery factory into a convention center and a warehouse into a boutique hotel, there was absolutely no time for my column. As Nate had so sensitively put it, everything has a shelf life.

“Thanks, Nate,” I said to no one. “I’ll always think of that when I watch you on television.”

Jerk.

I reviewed the bids for the projects. Wow. I knew they would be expensive, but lordy mercy. Our uber-expensive project meant a fight with the town council and I had to be ready for that ornery Jim Fleming. I’d swear, if his brains were dynamite, he couldn’t blow his nose.

I didn’t have an office at town hall, so sometimes Sid and I worked from my house, which I liked better. After all, I couldn’t be late for work that way. Every now and then, Toby sat in on our meetings. His insight astonished me. Another positive about working from home was how it deepened Sid’s and Toby’s friendship. Sometimes, while Sid and I worked, Toby made dinner. We’ve spent many pleasant evenings together.

I hadn’t mentioned to anyone about my re-connection with Toby. I chuckled just thinking about the reaction I’d get from the girls.

“What’s so funny?” Toby sauntered into the living room holding a plate of chocolate chunk brownies. “Just outta the oven.” He sank beside me. “Have one.”

“Are you trying to make me fat so no one else will look at me?” I grabbed a brownie.

“You found me out.” He grinned. “Now you know my evil plan.”

The brownies were delicious. Warm, moist, with that nice creamy bite of melting chocolate. “Well, it’s not like anyone will look at this graying, soon to be fifty-nine-year-old woman, anyway.”

“Baby.” Toby put his hand on my knee. “You can still turn any man’s head.” He paused. “Have you noticed how Sid looks at you? Why haven’t you set your sights on him. Have you noticed how much he looks like Richard Gere?”

If I were honest with myself, I’d confess that yes, I’d noticed. And yes, I had been attracted to him, but because of Nate, I never let myself think about Sid as anything other than a good friend. And now, with Toby and me, well, it just wasn’t in the cards.

“I think I’m good with your killer blue eyes. Truth is, I still see the young man I married.” I gave him a little push with my shoulder and wiggled my brownie. “Besides, you have skills.”

“I aim to please.” Toby’s grin turned serious.
